When Did You Stop Putting Yourself First?

Have you ever been so focused on achieving your goals that you stopped looking after yourself?

While working on publishing my book and growing my business, I found myself getting up earlier, rushing through my diary and cutting short the things that mattered. My children could see it too. They were asking me, “Mum, what are you doing?”

The difficult part was that I knew better. I talk about wellbeing and preventing burnout, yet I had slipped back into the very habits I encourage others to avoid.

Knowing what to do and actually doing it under pressure are two very different things.

Having experienced burnout twice, I know how easily old habits can return when life gets busy. We keep pushing because we care, take on more because we want to do a good job, and sometimes forget that our wellbeing matters too.

But we don't have to exhaust ourselves to prove that we are capable.

We can be ambitious and still rest. We can be passionate and still ask for help. We can care deeply about our work without putting ourselves last.

We are good enough without having to prove it.

If you are a teacher, headteacher or school leader who constantly pushes yourself to do more, remember that your wellbeing matters too.

What is one healthy habit you need to bring back into your life?
