Trauma affects everyone differently. What feels manageable to one person may feel overwhelming to another. Discover why understanding individual experiences matters in education and how compassion, listening and a trauma-informed approach can help people feel heard, understood and safe.

Have you ever wondered why something that feels manageable to you can feel completely overwhelming to someone else?

We often think of trauma as something caused by major life events, but it isn't always that straightforward. What one person finds difficult, another might cope with differently. Our experiences, how we process them, and the support we receive can all make a difference.

I think this is something we need to understand better in education, dare I say even in life in general? A child who struggles to make friends, for example, might find that experience deeply upsetting, even if another child in exactly the same situation doesn't. Or when two adults are in a car crash - they are likely to respond and react and be impacted very differently.

It's easy to look at someone else's experience and think they shouldn't be reacting that way. But we don't know what that experience feels like for them.

We cannot measure someone else's experience by how we would respond ourselves.

For teachers, practitioners and school leaders, this is an important part of becoming trauma-informed. Can I suggest that this greater level of understanding will benefit both yourself and those around you as well! Rather than making assumptions or judging behaviour, we can take a step back, listen and try to understand what might be happening beneath the surface.

We don't have to fully understand someone's experience to offer compassion and support.

Sometimes, simply helping someone feel heard, understood and safe can make a real difference
