Is It Just Me? When Self-Doubt Creeps Into Leadership

A woman shrugs with raised hands, looking confused and uncertain.

Have you ever had one of those moments where you suddenly think, “Is it just me?”

You might have years of experience behind you, you might have led teams, supported staff and dealt with situations that most people would find incredibly difficult, and yet there can still be that little voice questioning whether you're good enough.

I think this is something we don't talk about enough in education leadership. From the outside, you can look confident and capable while inside you're questioning yourself, replaying conversations and wondering whether you should have handled something differently.

I've had those moments myself. What I've learnt is that feeling uncertain doesn't mean you aren't capable. Sometimes we allow how we feel in that moment to become the evidence we use to judge ourselves.

But feelings aren't facts.

When self-doubt creeps in, it can be helpful to stop and look at the evidence instead. What have you already achieved? What experience do you have? What have other people trusted you to do? What difference have you made?

Those questions can give you a much more honest picture than the voice in your head telling you that you're not enough.

Confidence isn't about never doubting yourself. I think it's about learning to recognise the doubt, acknowledge it and still take the next step.

So if you've been feeling like an imposter, questioning your decisions or wondering whether you're the only one who feels this way, please remember that you probably aren't.

You don't have to feel completely confident before you act. Sometimes confidence comes because you acted anyway.
