Stop Pretending. Start Leading.

One of the biggest myths about leadership is that people expect you to have all the answers.
Whether you're leading a school, managing a team or supporting colleagues, it's easy to believe that showing uncertainty will make people lose confidence in you. So instead, many leaders do what they've always done. They put on a brave face, keep going and convince themselves they need to appear strong all the time.
The problem is that pretending is exhausting.
Many of the leaders I work with experience imposter syndrome at some point in their careers. I certainly did! They question whether they're good enough, whether they're making the right decisions or whether someone else would do a better job. The interesting thing is that these thoughts often affect the people who care the most.
Over time, I have realised that great leadership isn't about being perfect. It's about being authentic. People don't expect leaders to know everything. They want leaders who listen, admit when they don't have the answer and create an environment where others feel safe to do the same.
That kind of culture builds trust. It encourages learning instead of blame, collaboration instead of fear and confidence instead of perfectionism.
As Brené Brown reminds us, vulnerability isn't weakness. It's one of the foundations of courage. When leaders stop pretending they have everything under control, they give everyone else permission to be honest too.
Perhaps the question isn't, "How can I become a better leader?"
Perhaps it's, "How can I become a more authentic one?"
I believe that's where real leadership begins.
