Why So Many Nursery Leaders Are Running on Empty ?

One of the things I think we sometimes misunderstand about burnout is where it comes from. We often assume it happens because people are doing too much. While workload can certainly play a part, I don't think that's always the whole story.


Many people in caring professions spend their days supporting others. They listen, encourage, reassure, solve problems and help people through difficult situations. These things can be deeply rewarding, but they also require emotional energy. The challenge is that emotional energy isn't unlimited.


Over time, it can become easy to focus so much on what other people need that we stop paying attention to what we need ourselves. We tell ourselves we'll rest later, take a break when things are quieter or focus on ourselves once we've finished everything on the list. Unfortunately, that moment rarely arrives.


What makes this particularly difficult is that caring often feels natural. Looking after others becomes such a normal part of who we are that we don't always notice the cost. We recognise when someone else is struggling but can be much slower to recognise the signs in ourselves.


Perhaps that's why so many people find themselves running on empty without fully understanding how they got there. It isn't usually one big decision or one difficult week. It's the gradual effect of giving out more than we're putting back in.


Looking after ourselves isn't about becoming less caring. In many ways, it's what allows us to continue caring well for the people who depend on us.
