Are You Really Present as a Leader?

Somewhere right now, a leader is blindly moving from one meeting to the next. Not because they don’t care, but because the pace of the day has taken over.
The calendar is full, the work is getting done, and on the surface everything looks productive. But underneath that, something is missing. They’re physically there, but not fully present.
We’ve normalised this way of working. Back-to-back meetings, constant motion, always being “on.” But the mind doesn’t reset that quickly. It carries things forward, unfinished conversations, tension, thoughts that haven’t settled. And when you walk into the next room like that, your attention is already divided.
Your team feels that, even if nothing is said. Presence isn’t just about being there, it’s about how you arrive. And over time, when that presence isn’t consistent, trust begins to fade in subtle ways.
What often gets overlooked is that the most effective leaders aren’t the ones doing the most. They’re the ones who create space to think clearly and show up with intention. That doesn’t require a big change or more time, just a small shift in how you move between moments.
Even taking five minutes between meetings to pause, notice what you’re carrying, and reset how you want to show up can make a real difference. Not focusing on what you need to do next, but who you want to be in that next interaction
In the end, leadership is experienced in those moments. Not in how busy you are, but in how present you choose to be.
So it’s worth asking yourself honestly…are you really here?
